I had the pleasure of photographing the lovely Molly earlier in the year with her two special boys Henry & Chip. Molly got in touch after I was recommended to her by a friend and it looked like the sale of her superstar pony Chip was imminent. Luckily we managed to work some dates out and I was able to get down to Salisbury at quite short notice to do a Horse & Rider Photo Shoot with Molly, Henry & Chip.
Without doubt the hardest part of owning horses is the part where you have to say good bye. I remember my own childhood goodbyes to faithful ponies and the sadness that goes with it. It is therefore always such a privilege to be able to photograph a rider and their pony or horse before that day comes and ensure they have images to treasure their pony with for a lifetime.
The weather is always the biggest concern when it comes to a photo shoot out on location and the pressure does mount a little when there’s a lot of travelling involved. The day of Molly’s portrait shoot couldn’t have been any more perfect though and the ponies were extremely well behaved for the duration of their portrait shoot!
The trip down to Salisbury also allowed for a cheeky afternoon of hanging out on the Moors with some New Forest ponies, riding one of my own homebred horses who happens to live with some family friends very nearby and it’s always great to have an excuse to pop in and get back in the saddle. It was also a great opportunity to catch up with a very good friend who also lives nearby and allowed me to tie in another horse and rider shoot in Bristol on the way back up North. It was, therefore, an extremely busy couple of days but had all the right ingredients for the perfect Horse themed roadtrip!
I do wonder though whether Chip ever did get sold as when I saw Molly and her family a few weeks later for their viewing session he was still very much part of the family….. We definitely had a few of those over the years too….we did honestly intend to sell them but they just became far too much a part of the family….!
