Adventuring with kids is by no means an easy task.
(As I’ve discovered myself over the last year and a half) but Katy & Jonny make it look pretty effortless and a whole lot of fun! I met Katy & Jonny and their two gorgeous little ones last month for a Family Adventure Film + Photo Shoot at Moel Famau in the Clwydian Range in North Wales.
Combining stills with film and hiking up a mountain capturing and creating special memories for families is very much my happy place right now! Being out with a family who are doing what they love, allows me to capture them at their most relaxed and happiest. There’s no ‘posing’ for the camera, no retakes, just a whole lot of intention behind what I’m aiming to capture and then allowing the morning to flow as it more or less would naturally. I feel it’s a sort of hybrid documentary approach!
There were a couple of pre-planned stops and one impromptu one where I just couldn’t in all good faith walk past the most dreamy light in the forest! And I hope you will agree that it was worth it when you see the photos below!
With a Family Adventure Film + Photo Shoot there is never any pressure to ‘reach the summit’ or have a big wow moment, it’s all about capturing time spent together as a family. Being in a beautiful location such as the Clwyd Mountains certainly gives us a stunning backdrop but your local woods can tell just as important a story for you as a family.
On this occasion we did all make it to the summit of Moel Famau (even if Lucas was having a well-deserved nap by this point in the morning!) And of course the morning’s success was rightfully celebrated with cake and hot chocolate back in the car park afterwards. There is absolutely nothing better than a good cup of hot chocolate after a walk in my books!
It’s all worth it when…
For me, as a family photographer and filmmaker, these moments are as precious to capture as the celebrations at the trig point. I can promise you that there was absolutely nothing prompted or scripted about the dialogue between Katy & Lily in this scene at the end of the film. When Katy asks Lily what her favourite part of the morning has been and Lily replies, ‘being with you’ I realised this is literally the reason I’m making this move into both working more with families and incorporating filmmaking into my work. This is a moment that Katy will be able to relive and rewatch for the rest of her life and bring her right back to this moment. Yes, life with little ones can be chaotic, it’s full on and can feel overwhelming at times but these moments are what it’s all about. Being able to capture them and preserve them for a lifetime is what my Family Adventure Film + Photo Shoots aim to do.
I have an introductory offer on my Family Adventure Film + Photo Shoots this Autumn & Winter.
You can find out more by heading HERE and if you’d like to follow Katy’s blog and see more of her adventures with her little ones you can head to her MY MOUNTAINS AND ME website. She’s got tons of inspiring routes/tips and guides to get you outdoors with your little ones in tow!
Happy Adventuring until next time!
